From divinely scented green space to the vibrant pavement cafe culture, one thing is clear: spring is here. With the days gradually stretching themselves, the city awakens from its slumber to offer countless opportunities in warmer weather. Here are five tips on how to enjoy spring in Vienna.
1. Get a floral fix
Who needs the countryside when you have Vienna’s gardens and parks. From Burggarten and Stadtpark, to the carpeted gardens of Schönbrunn Palace, spring welcomes a handpicked selection of aesthetic delights – all of which can be explored free of charge. The ambience of each respective garden is motivation in itself to dust off that yoga mat and, well, stretch into the warmer months. Another notable highlight are the famous roses in the Volksgarten: a vivid display that attracts countless admirers year-on-year.
2. Al fresco dining with a view
Dust off the blanket and pack up the basket – your spring picnic awaits at the Old Danube! With green space aplenty, soak up the fresh air and endless water at one of Vienna’s most picturesque sites. And what’s more? Once you’ve finished, take a dip or if the weather is still warming up, hire a rowing or electric boat and discover even more – no spoilers, we promise!
3. Fancy a whizz?
What’s better than four wheels? Two! Hop on, hop off doesn’t just apply to buses in Vienna – as a city fully accessible by bicycle, nothing beats a spring day pedalling the city. With numerous cycle paths along the Danube, through Prater – a large park with old-time amusements and rides – and in the charming alleyways of the city centre, each has an offering of bars and cafes that can give any tour a flair of both urban and nature combined.
4. Spot anything nice?
As soon as the temperatures rise, Vienna’s flea markets re-open to invite you to browse their eclectic offerings. The flea market at Naschmarkt is a true institution, opening its doors every Saturday from 6:30am to 3pm for visitors to explore everything from vintage fashion and antiques to quirky curiosities – everything a collector’s heart desires.
5. A one-of-a-kind culture
Is there anything better than soaking up the sun with a Wiener Melange – a specialty coffee similar to a cappuccino – and a slice of chocolate-layered Sacher-Torte? Then visit one of the famed coffee houses or cafes in the first district or meander the idyllic side streets of Spittelberg. Insider tip: if you’re looking for a large selection of pastries, definitely visit Cafe Siebenstern – plus they have a varied cultural programme on most evenings!
